FIRE SUPPRESSION
Your Water Arc of Fire Protection
Be prepared by getting your copy of the provincial FireSmart Manual
This information is provided as a public service by MEC SYSTEMS INC. to help you safeguard your property from accidental, grass and forest fires. Be FireSmart.
If you live in or near a forested region of our province, sooner or later you may have to contend with the spread of a
wildfire. The best protection against loss, damage or injury due to wildfire is prevention.
Both the British Columbia and Alberta provincial governments have produced FireSmart Manuals to assist property
owners in reducing fire damage risk. Properly preparing your home and community doesn’t guarantee that you will
not incur fire damage, but it does reduce the risks. Some of these preventative measures cost very little and reduce
fire dangers by a great deal; others require planning and a long-term commitment to change. Following the expert
advice provided in the FireSmart Manual combined with the installation of the X5 Protector Fire Suppression System
will dramatically increase the survival of your property in the event of a grass or forest fire.

Numerous communities have created their own structure protection units and trained their fire
departments in the deployment of the units for the purpose of protecting interface areas within their
own fire protection districts. Individuals and emergency management stake holders must be ready to
act effectively should a wild land urban interface fire occur. Measures should include development and
maintenance of emergency plans, mutual aid agreements, resource inventories, training exercises and
available emergency communications systems.
As Disaster Financial Assistance is not provided to individuals and businesses for losses sustained
due to wild land urban interface fire events, it is a best practice for individuals and businesses to
purchase adequate insurance and implement adequate safeguards to reduce such losses.
Some 65% of fires are caused by human activities and the remainder, 35%, by lightning. However, this
latter cause accounts for 85% of the area burned because such fires occur randomly and in more
remote areas. This delays detection of the fire and makes access difficult for fire-fighters, thereby
frustrating quick initial attack and allowing the fire to become well established before mitigation efforts
can be brought to bear.
It has been highly recommended by forest fire experts that property owners should establish a form of
fire suppression which can be quickly accessed by them in the case of an approaching grass or forest
fire. MEC Systems Inc. has spent the past three years in research and development to produce such
a system.
